70 Latin Youtube channels organized and labeled
Have you ever wondered how much Latin content is out there?
There are how many Latin channels?
Did you realize there are at least 70 channels on Youtube that are dedicated to producing Latin content? Some of these channels are more productive than others, but that’s still a whole lot of Latin material! We still need more channels focused on producing beginner level-content (see the Magister Marcus and Magister Craft channels in the list below for good examples), but we already have dozens of hours of it.
Why listen to or watch anything in Latin?
Animi causa, for starters. But also, people who initially learned Latin using the grammar-translation based methods often later realize they want to learn how to read Latin. However, it can be challenging for some people to break out of the mental habit of translating each word into English. I still struggle with this a bit when reading poetry even though I read Latin every day — I almost exclusively learned about Latin poetry by translating each word and then later taught AP Latin, which seems to have cemented this habit into my brain. Something that really helped me get out of the habit of translating in my head was listening to Latin and later speaking. When you listen (or speak) you really don’t have time to translate what you are hearing. It can be a little disconcerting at first if you are used to exclusively translating, but listening to level-appropriate materials for beginners makes this process a lot easier.
Why did I make this list?
In order to help you find Latin content, I’ve listed most of the Youtube channels that have been or are dedicated to producing mostly Latin videos or a substantial number of them. I’ve tried to give you an idea of the level of the content in each channel and the topics of the videos. I also think it’s important to note which channels have subtitles or display the text on screen as this can be helpful for learners, so you’ll find that information as well. I hope you find this list useful in your studies and enjoyment of the Latin language!
*This list is in alphabetical order. You’ll see a ⭐ by the channels I consider the “core” or “essential,” especially for learners.
